LIVE REVIEW: The Caballeros vs The Wrestlers with special guests Scalphunter & Freak Vibe

June 1, 2023Sean Bennett

In the cut and thrust world of live music it's good to try think outside of the box in a way that will attract paying punters. Kings of the ‘outside-the-box’ evenings, The Caballeros rolled the roulette wheel, put everything on red and hit the jackpot with a fantastic evening full of local brews, wrestling, storylines and hard n’ fast music, with twists and turns a-plenty. It's so good when an event sells out but this was so well supported that an extension had to be applied for to allow for extra tickets to be made available on the door…and these too soon sold out.

Local brewers Neighbourhood Brew were there to entice us with their delicious beers, before the ring took centre stage as we were treated to three bouts of wrestling brought to us by Explosive Pro Wrestling Perth. Up on the band stage the first of the supports fired up the room (and the smoke alarm) as Freak Vibe made sure anyone not taking note were well and truly focused on the stage. Two more bouts of wrestling allowed ringing ears to ease before the second of the live bands, Scalphunter tore into their fast paced set.

A final wrestling bout allowed members of The Caballeros to goad the combatants in the ring, building the storyline for a chaotic finish. That very chaos ensued once the most handsome band in town fired up their instruments and kicked things off to an electric crescendo. It's been a while between drinks with this band, so I was pleased to hear the new material is well and truly settling into their set along with many of the older faves.

And then the big twist of the night as the stage was rushed by many of the wrestlers, as they man handled and ‘kidnapped’ the band, dragging them off stage. "Can any of you out there play instruments? I reckon we could build a band do out do those fakes!" Cue the ‘random’ volunteers to grace the stage; Greg Dear, Paige Savill (Alex Andra), Molly Corduroy (The Wedges), Abby Soanes (ex-Legs Electric) and Alex Hay (ex-Caballeros). They even stripped off coats to reveal the trademark white shirts before blasting into ‘Lovesick Cassanova’, ‘Want Me to Go’ and ‘The Caballeros Twist’.

It wasn't long before the rest were allowed to leave their captivity to return for a full ensemble version of ‘Twist & Shout’ to complete a superb evening of entertainment! Rock n’ wrestle? Bring on more of it!
