Reviewer: Morgan Goldberg, contributorModel tested: Floyd SectionalThe details: Named after cofounder Kyle Hoff's great-grandfather, grandfather, and father, who were all steelworkers, Floyd was launched in 2013 as a response to the world's disposable furniture problem. The Detroit-based brand began with the Floyd Leg, a powder-coated steel piece that allows you to build a 16"-high table with any flat surface, and has expanded its offerings to include the hyper-popular Bed Frame, sofas, storage, and more. Durability and sustainability continue to be at the forefront of Floyd's designs—they’ve even committed to becoming carbon neutral.

Price: How much does it cost? Are there payment plans available?

Floyd's The Sectional is a modern, modular sectional with endless possibilities. Its least expensive pre-configured option features two seats (so it's more of a loveseat than a sectional) and costs between $2,120 and $3,920, depending on which fabric you choose. The priciest version includes five seats (including a chaise) and ranges from $5,305 to $9,275 (once again, depending on the fabric). You can also customize a configuration, which will be priced accordingly. Payment plans are available through Affirm.

What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any?

As I mentioned, the configuration customizations are limitless. When it comes to fabrics, you can choose from five muted colors of Floyd's classic Performance Fabric (which are the most cost-effective), two neutral hues of nubby recycled cotton bouclé, seven rich, felt-like Tonus fabrics, and five jewel-toned, woven Sisu fabrics. The Tonus and Sisu options are a collaboration with the Danish textile brand Kvadrat and are the most expensive.

I opted for a four-seat sectional with a right-side chaise in the Pebble bouclé, which costs $5,285 when it's not on sale (though Floyd frequently runs promotions).

What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery?

Depending on the configuration and fabric you choose, the estimated delivery lead time is between 3 and 15 weeks.

What kind of couch or seating arrangement did you have before, and what drew you to your new couch?

I moved into a new apartment right before ordering The Sectional, so I didn't have any seating arrangements in the space. My last apartment was built in the 1960s, so I went for the three-seat Article Timber Sofa in Olio Green, which has a bit of midcentury flare. It's extremely comfortable—pillowy, but not too slouchy—and I loved it. I paired it with a set of two black leather armchairs.

In contrast, my new apartment was updated in the past five years and features contemporary finishes, so I wanted a more modern design than The Article sofa. The living area is more compact, which meant I couldn't easily fit a three-seater and a set of armchairs. I knew an L-shaped sectional would maximize seating in the space, without making it feel too small. With its sleek, boxy silhouette and variety of configuration options, The Sectional was an easy decision for my new home.

What was the delivery process like?

The delivery process was far from smooth. When I placed the order, the estimated delivery lead time was 10 weeks, but The Sectional didn't arrive until 14 weeks after. When it was delivered, one of the four pieces was incorrect. It took another three weeks to receive the correct piece and a few days after that for the incorrect piece to be picked up. At each and every turn, it was a challenge to get a response from the customer service team about the status of my order. It was a frustrating experience, to say the least.

The actual delivery, however, was easy. In the New York area, Floyd partners with RXO for shipping. Once my order was ready for delivery, I received a text from RXO with a tracking number and a prompt to schedule the delivery. The day before my chosen date, I received another text with a time window. The delivery workers called me 30 minutes before their arrival. They brought each piece into my apartment in just the plastic, since the boxes wouldn't fit through our doors. They were efficient and professional.

What was the assembly process like? How long did it take and how many people?

The assembly process seemed like it would be simple, given the modular design, but proved to be tricky. It took two people and lots of trial-and-error to connect all four pieces using the alligator clips underneath them. The clips were hard to align and easily came apart while trying to move the entire sectional as one. Now that The Sectional is connected and in place, the clips still come apart somewhat frequently. We’re looking for DIY ways to keep them more secure.

What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?

The overall dimensions of the four-seat sectional with a right side chaise are 115.5"W x 88"D x 27.4"H, which turned out to be perfect for my space. It's a miracle, because my measuring skills are subpar, but it truly couldn't fit any better.

Sit test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?

The Sectional is very comfortable for sitting! It's relatively firm, as are most structured sofas like this one, but it definitely has enough give to sink in a bit. The fabric ripples a little after a long sitting session, but can be easily smoothed out, and the cushions have yet to sag at all. The low back doesn't bother me or my husband, who's quite tall, but it's a feature to be wary of if that's a pet peeve of yours. We both enjoy the luxurious, 26.5"-deep seats.

Lay test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?

My husband and I have both napped on The Sectional—at the same time, fully stretched out in opposite directions—and it definitely passes the lay test. The deep seats offer plenty of room to get cozy and sleep. Just note that the arms are very boxy, so you’ll want some throw pillows to rest your head.

Is the sectional suitable for particular decor styles and, if so, which?

The Sectional's clean lines and minimal style make it ideal for contemporary homes, but it can work in transitional spaces that combine modern and traditional pieces, too, because it's not overly futuristic or austere.

Is it durable/practical in a modern home? Is the couch kid and/or dog friendly?

We don't have children or pets, so our sectional hasn't seen spills or stains yet, luckily. According to Floyd's website, the Performance Fabric and bouclé are more pet-friendly than the Kvadrat fabrics.

What are the care and cleaning instructions? Do you think stains could be easily removed?

For the Performance Fabric and bouclé, Floyd recommends treating spills by blotting with a dry cloth and then cleaning with a cloth soaked in soap and water. If that doesn't work, they suggest repeating the process with a basic laundry detergent instead of soap. This sounds like it would work!

Do the photos do this product justice? Was there anything you were surprised to see IRL?

When it comes to style and silhouette, the website photos and the actual product are identical. The Pebble bouclé fabric, however, is a lighter, warmer, more heather gray than it looks online. In some lights, it even comes off more oatmeal than gray. Though I was surprised by this difference in tone, I still like the fabric.

Would the couch be easy to move into another room? Would it be easy to move to another apartment or home by yourself?

The Sectional is impossible to move whilst the pieces are connected, since they easily come apart upon any intentional movement, but two people can certainly move it piece by piece to another room. I cannot lift even a single piece by myself, though. The same goes for a move to another home—you’d need two people to move each piece at a time. One of the best parts about The Sectional is that you can order individual pieces if you need a different configuration for a future space. Since The Sectional is modular, it's truly designed for the future.
